There are lots of reports, here in Australia, on COVID-19 developments in Europe and the USA. But far fewer on what is happening in the global South where most of the world's people live.
Here's a link to some blog posts from South Africa, Nigeria and Tanzania where the problems being faced are similar to those faced by the poor in rich countries, only much more intense. As Femi Aborisade puts it: 'in the absence of public support, ... the hunger virus is no different from COVID-19'.
There has been tension between rich countries regarding competitive bidding to obtain the shortage of personal protective equipment and ventilators. The United States has been accused of piracy, and the USA has threatened India, Malaysia and other developing countries with retaliation if they do not supply them ('America First'). Modi quickly succumbed to these threats, made only weeks after the populist Modi-Trump lovefest were they expressed undying love for each other.
I'm not yet reading much coverage of similar diversions from Africa to the global North, although presumably the rapid price rises caused by uncontrolled bidding in a private market are making necessary equipment impossibly expensive for all countries in the global South. I welcome links to more information on this.
